How to Get Out of an Armbar

Visualize this: you're stuck deep in an armbar from the top position (you're on the bottom).

With just a split-second of freedom before your arm gets straightened, you take hold of onto your lapel with your trapped arm.

What happens side by side will be determined by a few contributing factors: how skillful your partner is at finishing the armlock, how adept y'all are at escaping, possibly how tired yous both are, and possibly what has happened during the roll leading up to this event (recollect: sport BJJ, and one of you is upwards on points with a minute to go).

What you can control from this is what we'll focus on here: how skilful yous are at escaping. Hither is a high-percentage defence and escape you tin can start working on right away.

Defensive Grips to Utilise in an Armbar

When yous get defenseless in the armbar terminate position, there are several possible defensive grips you might use (either willingly or considering you don't take any other choice). These include, but are not limited to:

  • Palm-to-palm
  • The RNC grip (both behind and on top of their leg)
  • The "mummy"
  • Hiding your hand inside your thigh

Scroll to Continue

While all of these take a place, the principal focus hither is the lapel grip, so showtime by gripping your lapel with your trapped mitt. If your right mitt is caught in the armbar, this ways that your left hand will now be freed upward.

Catch your partner's right pant leg inside of your partner's knee, and slide your left elbow under your partner's correct leg (but be sure not to swim under with your hand, unless you lot enjoy being triangled!). Now you lot're prepare for the side by side steps.

  • Once yous accept your grips all set, the name of the game is going to exist trapping their right human foot in betwixt your legs. If you can elevate your partner's human foot (carefully! remember the triangle), you can frequently but shove their pes into your baby-sit and go from at that place, just nigh people are going to make this equally difficult as possible.
  • Instead, attempt walking your legs around to the side and then that you can position your hips under their pes, and then just shut your guard around their foot. Yous essentially accept a crappy sort of deep half guard here, and you lot tin make finishing the armbar very hard (even if they utilize a grip pause to get your arm free). Why? In a nutshell, their knees can't pinch together to isolate your arm (or at least, you can make them pinching their knees very, very hard).
  • Finally, yous can get-go to turn in toward your opponent. Sometimes it is possible to stack from there, just generally, yous'll demand to grip their pants (use the same paw you used to initially trap their foot), and and so sneak your head out from underneath their leg.

Putting It All Together

Yous tin break this escape down into three parts.

  1. First, you demand to get your initial grips. Remember, your correct hand gets a strong lapel grip, neutralizing the immediate threat of the armbar end, and your left hand grips inside of their knee, while your elbow makes its manner underneath your partner's human foot.
  2. 2nd, you need to trap their foot. This can be accomplished either by simply stuffing the foot into your guard, or else by walking your hips out and simply keeping their foot from following you.
  3. Third, you need to come upward on pinnacle (generally, you'll need to sneak your head out from underneath their top leg). This tertiary step definitely comes with a caveat, as y'all can practice a multifariousness of dissimilar things, including something like a waiter sweep that I will almost definitely cover in a futurity tutorial.

Counters to Counter

E'er continue in listen that for every escape, there is a counter, and you're likely to encounter someone skilful at finishing the wristlock when you grab the lapel initially (you lot can definitely adjust and survive anyhow, but don't get discouraged initially). Your chances of tapping confronting a savvy opponent are, after all, very high from a solid terminate position. Even so, this escape series serves me well against very practiced folks, and I hope it does the aforementioned for you! As always, please let me know if you are able to use this escape successfully.
